North Myrtle Beach

North Myrtle Beach is not simply the northern end of Myrtle Beach. It is a separate city made up of several beach communities, and understanding that distinction helps when choosing where to stay on the Grand Strand.

The atmosphere is still unmistakably vacation-oriented, but development is more spread out than around central Myrtle Beach.

Beaches and communities

Areas such as Cherry Grove and Ocean Drive each have their own identity. The long shoreline means you can choose a beach location that suits the kind of trip you want rather than automatically heading towards the busiest resort blocks.

North Myrtle Beach is also closely associated with shag dancing, a Carolina tradition that remains part of the local cultural identity.

Who should stay here?

I would consider North Myrtle Beach if beach access matters more than being close to the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. Families and repeat visitors may particularly appreciate having room to spread out.

You can still drive to central Myrtle Beach attractions, but traffic and distances along the Grand Strand can make journeys slower than they look on a map.

That is why choosing your base matters. If most of your plans are in the north, staying here avoids unnecessary back-and-forth and gives you a slightly different version of the Myrtle Beach vacation.
